In April, Direct Air welcomed a new member of the team. Today, we’re catching up with Jude to find out how his apprenticeship is providing him with valuable skills for life.
Since starting at Direct Air, Jude has got stuck into both his college studies and on-the-job training. Taking on responsibility from day one, he has quickly become a valued part of the Health & Safety team’s day-to-day operations. We caught up with him to find out how he’s settling into the role so far…
Meet Jude
Jude is 20 and began his HSQE apprenticeship Direct Air in April 2026. Working within the Health & Safety department, he enrolled onto the course to strengthen his existing skills and grow within his role.
What made you decide to start an apprenticeship in HSQE?
Following the completion of my T Level course in Building Services Engineering, I developed a strong understanding of Health, Safety and Environment, but I wanted to learn more about how it is applied in a real working environment. After finishing the course, I gained around five months of on-site experience working alongside carpentry, electrical and plumbing teams, which gave me valuable insight into how sites operate and the important role Health & Safety plays across different trades. I also completed several IOSH and CITB training courses, which helped lead me towards starting this HSEQ apprenticeship.
What are you currently learning as part of your college course and training plan?
At the moment, I am learning the fundamentals of Health & Safety, including the six-pack regulations, waste management, risk assessments, and how these are applied within the workplace. My training is helping me build a better understanding of workplace procedures, legal responsibilities, and the importance of maintaining safe working environments. Alongside the theory-based side of the course, I am also gaining practical experience at Direct Air, which is helping me apply what I learn in college to real-life situations on site and within the business.
What types of tasks and responsibilities have you been involved with at Direct Air so far?
So far, I have been supporting Jim with collating data for Net Zero carbon emission goals, creating RAMS, assessing non-conformances, and helping develop solutions to issues raised. I have also been reviewing service checks, assisting in the stores department, updating certifications, and attending site visits to gain a better understanding of how compressed air systems operate on site.
How do you think combining hands-on workplace experience with college learning will help you develop your skills and future career?
I believe combining workplace experience with college learning helps me better understand the principles behind what I am studying, rather than only learning the theory in a classroom environment. Applying this knowledge in real-life situations will help me continue developing my HSEQ skills and experience, while supporting my long-term progression within the industry.
