Back in January, Direct Air welcomed Scott to the team, and we wanted to hear how his apprenticeship is shaping both technical knowledge and professional confidence in the sales department.
Scott joined Direct Air as a Sales Apprentice in January 2025 and since then he has been combining on the job learning with classroom-based study. He gave us an insight into his apprenticeship so far…
Why did you choose to start an apprenticeship?
I chose to start an apprenticeship because I wanted to combine practical, hands-on experience with structured learning. I’ve always believed that the best way to understand a role is by doing it, and an apprenticeship allows me to develop real-world skills while also working toward a qualification. It’s a great way to build a strong foundation in the compressed air industry and prepare myself for long-term career growth.
What does your apprenticeship consist of?
My apprenticeship is a mix of on-the-job training and classroom-based learning, covering both the technical aspects of the role and broader professional skills. While working alongside experienced colleagues, I gain direct insight into how things operate day to day and the technical aspect of the industry. The classroom element supports this by covering professional skills like communication, time management, and problem-solving. Together, they help me apply what I learn in a practical and meaningful way.
Have you done any extra training courses alongside your apprenticeship?
Yes, alongside my apprenticeship, I’ve completed a number of additional training courses to broaden my knowledge and support my development in the compressed air industry. This included BCAS (British Compressed Air Society) courses and supplier-led training with key manufacturers BEKO, BOGE and Donaldson. This gave me a deeper insight into their products, technologies and best practices to stay up to date with industry standards.
What tasks are you taking on in the workplace?
In my role, I’m involved in a variety of tasks that support the daily operations of the team. I’ve also been trusted with smaller projects where I can work independently, which has helped me grow in confidence and take on more responsibility over time. I’m constantly learning from those around me and gradually stepping into more complex areas of work.
Are you enjoying your job role and what are you most looking forward to after your apprenticeship is complete?
Yes, I’m really enjoying it, every day is a chance to learn something new, and I feel genuinely supported in my development. After completing my apprenticeship, I’m most looking forward to progressing further in my career and taking on more complex work once I’ve gained more industry experience.
