In the complex world of modern manufacturing, one essential utility often works unseen: compressed air. For over three decades, Direct Air and Pipework has quietly ensured the smooth operation of countless UK factories, standing out not just for its technical expertise but for its unique identity as a family-rooted business with a soaring trajectory.

Founded in 1993 by Allan Dolby Jr. (current Managing Director) and Allan Dolby Sr., the company began with a clear, dual vision: to deliver expert compressed air solutions and manage the intricate pipework installations—a crucial capability often outsourced by competitors. This full-service approach, alongside the technical foundations laid by Will Farrell (now Director of Service Operations), quickly established Direct Air as a reliable cornerstone of the Midlands industrial landscape.

A Bespoke Approach to a Vital Utility

For Direct Air, compressed air is far more than a commodity; its a tailored solution. The company positions itself as an extension of its customers' engineering teams, providing essential support and expertise rather than just equipment.

The secret to their success lies in a deeply consultative approach. As senior management member Emma Dolby highlights, they rarely sell a compressor off the shelf.” Instead, they begin every major project with meticulous data logging. This assessment determines the customers precise needs—from air quality standards (critical for sectors like food, beverage, and pharmaceuticals) to shift patterns and exact air volume requirements.

This dedication to bespoke, efficient solutions ensures customers receive the most environmentally friendly and energy-saving setup, maximising output and minimising costs. As Emma notes, their job is "to make the customer look good," by providing seamless, dependable service that keeps the customers operations running flawlessly.

Unrivalled Service and Capacity

While the company does not manufacture compressors itself—partnering with leading names like CompAir—its strength lies in comprehensive service and robust inventory. Having expanded from one unit to two Coventry bases (plus an additional premises in Cheltenham), the firms physical capacity is now as robust as its technical know-how.

This scale allows Direct Air to hold significant stock, reducing lead times that plague the wider industry. They offer a unique rental/hire fleet of compressors, providing a critical lifeline for customers who cannot afford downtime, ensuring continuity even during maintenance or breakdowns. Furthermore, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and customer support, they strip down and recycle older, legacymachines to keep essential spare parts in circulation for clients.

Investing in the Future: The Family Legacy

Despite their growth—from three original employees to nearly 50 today—Direct Air has maintained its wholesome family culture. This ethos is reflected in their exceptional staff retention and dedication to mentorship.

The firm boasts several employees with over 20 years of service, including a Senior Installations Engineer who has been with them for three decades. Crucially, they actively tackle the industrys skills gap through proactive apprenticeship programs. They offer roles across engineering (Mechatronics, Maintenance, and the newly revised Compressed Air and Vacuum Technician standard) and business support, successfully nurturing young talent into senior positions.

From the first employee in Marketing to the Projects and Installations Manager, many senior leads are former apprentices. This investment ensures that the accumulated knowledge of the older generation is seamlessly passed down, guaranteeing that the company remains at the forefront of compressed air technology for decades to come. Direct Air and Pipework is a clear demonstration that a focused, family-driven business model, powered by technical excellence, can achieve dynamic and sustained growth.
