Compressed air systems are the backbone of numerous industrial operations, but it’s critical to remember that the high-pressure nature of these systems inherently carries significant risks. To minimise these risks as much as possible and ensure both safety and compliance with regulatory standards, it’s essential to implement a Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) for all new and existing compressed air installations.
A Written Scheme of Examination is a formal report that details safety devices and components associated with the systems pressure vessels. It will also detail inspection periods and sometimes a schematic drawing of the whole compressed air systems network is required. Essentially, it serves as a strategic plan to ensure that the compressed air system operates safely and efficiently throughout its lifecycle.
Let's talk legal
Implementing a Written Scheme of Examination is a legal requirement. In the UK, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) 2000 mandate that owners and end users of pressure systems, including compressed air systems, must have a WSE in place. As the user/owner of the compressed air system, you are responsible for compliance with these regulations and failure to do so can result in penalties including fines and potential legal action.
Ensuring safety
The primary objective of a WSE is to ensure the safety of all staff and equipment. By conducting regular inspections and tests as outlined in the WSE, potential issues can be identified and addressed before they escalate into major hazards.
Implementing a WSE also provides a documented record of compliance. This is especially impactful in the event of an incident or audit, having a well-documented WSE demonstrates that your organisation has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of the compressed air system. In order to maintain accuracy, remember that a written scheme of examination needs to be updated if you modify your compressed air system!
How can Direct Air assist with your WSE?
At Direct Air we have in-house capability to provide written scheme examinations. A member of our team will attend site to identify, inspect and test all safety related equipment within your compressed air system. From a WSE, Direct Air can provide schematic drawings of all the compressed air systems and pipework for ease of air compressor servicing.
Record all safety devices – items include pressure vessels, safety valves, pressure gauges and many more.
Record serial numbers and tag items – for easy identification in the future!
Write the WSE document – lists each item and often includes a schematic layout of your system, listing all the tagged items and their location relative to each other.
Complete safety inspection – once everything has passed the test the WSE is complete.
